Dr. Segundo Mariz

MD, LLB, Consultant, Former Scientific Officer, Orphan Medicines

Dr Segundo Mariz has been involved in Rare Diseases since 2009 when he was promoted by the MHRA to UK member of the Committee for Orphan Medicinal Products. He has been been closely associated with Rare Diseases and their regulatory aspects since. Dr Mariz left the MHRA to join the European Medicines Agency as a Scientific Officer for Orphan Medicines within the Orphan Office. He retired and consults since 2025. He qualified as a Medical Doctor at the University of Liege, Liege Belgium in 1988, obtained post-graduate degrees in Public Health at the Universite Catholique de Louvain, Brussels Belgium, and Drug Development at the University of Surrey in 2002. Dr Mariz also obtained a Law Degree at the Open University in 2017.
His prior experience was working for pharmaceutical industry between 1990 and 2006 (UCB Pharma and Takeda) before he joined the MHRA in 2006.
